Brandon Crick shot a nine-under-par 62 on Friday to take the tournament lead at 14 under par. Crick found success by limiting mistakes. He did not have a single bogey in round two while sinking seven birdies, plus an eagle on hole No. 6.
"This is probably my fourth time out here," Crick said. "I know the course really well and kind of know some good spots to miss on. I mean, there's definitely some green complexes out here that you've got to know what side to miss on. (I) felt like I've been doing that well."
For Crick, 36, a win at the Suncoast Classic would be his first of the year — and the first of his career. His best 2024 finish came at the Astara Chile Classic in Santiago, Chile, inMarch, where he tied for fifth at 15 under par.
There are several golfers behind Crick hoping to overtake him on Saturday. Morgan Hoffmann is in second place at 13 under par after shooting a seven-under-par 64 on Friday. Mason Andersen, who led the field after day one, is still in contention, sitting in third at 12 under par. He shot three under par Friday. Seven golfers are tied for fourth at 11 under par, and 10 golfers are tied for 11th at 10 under par.
The tournament cut line was five under par. Miles Russell, the 15-year-old junior golfer who received an exemption to play the event, was one of the 60 golfers who made the cut. He's the youngest player in the Tour's history to accomplish that feat. Russell is tied for 26th at eight under par. It is his first time playing a professional event.
"I'm kind of speechless," Russell said of his accomplishment. "The goal was to make the cut and we made it, so we'll see where the weekend goes."
