An 18-year-old Bradenton man died early Friday morning when the car he was a passenger in went out-of-control off Fort Hamer Road and went into the Manatee River.

The driver, another 18-year-old Bradenton man, was going south at 3 a.m. when he failed to negotiate a left turn just before the Fort Hamer bridge and entered the boat launch's parking lot. The car continued to travel south and entered the river, according to a Florida Highway Patrol report.

The driver managed to swim to shore and had no injuries.

The passenger was pronounced dead at the scene.

The crash is under investigation.
