Longboat Key still under boil water notice, some power outages

Longboat Key residents now have full access to the island.

As of 1:30 p.m. on Sept. 12, all roads were considered passable, an email from Susan Phillips, assistant to the town manager, said.

The email also stated information regarding power outages, water and emergency repair permits.

The mandatory boil water notice will remain in effect until laboratory tests have confirmed the system water is safe to drink. Residents and businesses must continue to boil water used for drinking, cooking, making ice, brushing teeth and washing dishes. A rolling boil of one minute is sufficient.

Power outages are on a street-to-street basis. Residents can visit www.fplmaps.com and report outages or check on the status of a reported outage.

Waste Management will collect storm-related yard debris in containers or bundled and placed at curbside as regularly scheduled on Wednesday, Sept. 13. Bundles need to be tied at both ends and should be no longer than four feet and 16 inches in diameter. Each bundle should weigh no more than 40 pounds.

Garbage collection will resume as normal on Thursday, Sept. 14. Garbage and recycling service will resume Monday, Sept. 18.

Requests for emergency repair permits from contractors and owners must be made by phone or in person to the Building Department Office with the following information:

• An explanation of the circumstances and specific work to be performed
• Property address
• Contact information for contractor and property owner

The building official will give verbal authorization to begin emergency repair work. Repair work will begin within 24 hours of the verbal authorization.

Access to Bay Isles and Bayview drive were cleared yesterday evening.

Gail Loefgren, president of the Longboat Key Chamber of Commerce, wrote in an email to members that emergency managers in Sarasota and Manatee counties were enlisting the chamber's help in assessing the state of businesses on the island.
