Checks, please
5 p.m. — 700 block of South Tamiami Trail. Burglary and Worthless Document. A business owner said someone stole two checks from his safe, so he stopped payment on them. The bank said there had been no attempt to cash the checks. However, when the business owner checked his statement, he noticed that three other checks, a total of $4,000, had been drawn on his account. He looked at the check numbers and saw that they were counterfeit, because he still had those checks in his checkbook.

He said, she said
12:37 p.m. — 6500 South Tamiami Trail. Disturbance. The complainant said she was in a restaurant parking lot when a man approached her. The man’s wife used to work for the complainant but was fired. The man began cursing at her and threatening her. She called the sheriff’s office, and he drove away. A deputy went to his home and asked him what happened. The man said the complainant had been going to his wife’s new office and harassing her. He admitted he approached the complainant in the parking lot, but said he only politely asked her to leave his wife alone. He said it was the complainant who cursed at and threatened him. The deputy told them to pursue a restraining order if there were any further harassment issues.

In the dog house
4:28 p.m. — 2300 block of Margaret Street. Animal Problem. Complainant called police for help because he was unable to get out of his car — a pit bull would not let him out.

I feel like we’re being watched
4 p.m. — 3500 block of South Tamiami Trail. Petit Theft. A department-store security guard was watching two women on the surveillance system. They passed by a cash-register kiosk three times before sneaking in and grabbing an employee’s purse. One of the women shoved it under her dress, and the two made their way to the dressing rooms. They didn’t realize they needed an employee to unlock the door, so they crept behind a clothes rack and began going through the purse. They, then, made their way to the door. The guard stopped them and called police. The employee said she keeps her valuables in her locker.

Resilient fellow
6:45 p.m. — 800 block of South Palm Avenue. Vehicle Accident. A bicyclist was hit by a car. According to the police report, “the bicyclist was shaken, but stood right up.”

Publisher is clearing house
12:30 p.m. — 500 block of South Pelican Drive. Suspicious Person. A homeowner said he bought a subscription to Rolling Stone magazine from a man going door-to-door. After he wrote a check for $67, the homeowner checked the man’s named on the Internet. He called himself Jordan Wyatt, of Phoenix. There is a warning on the Web about a magazine sales scam, which involves a Jordan Wyatt, of Phoenix. The homeowner said he was canceling the check.

Lost without love
2:33 a.m. — McIntosh Road and Clark Road. Information. Complainant said he heard a man yelling, “breathe!” for about 10 minutes. A deputy found the culprit, who said he was “hanging there, because me and my lady friend had an argument tonight.” No reason was given why he was yelling, “breathe.”

The hard sell
11:01 a.m. — 1500 block of Main Street. Suspicious Person. Two men were seen panhandling for money and yelling at passersby.
