8:30 a.m. — 500 block of General Harris Street. Code Enforcement. A woman called police to report that a boat trailer with no tag was sitting illegally in a driveway. Police contacted the owner of the trailer, who told police he had gotten a tag for the trailer and was leaving for the Keys with it. Better get a move on …

Life’s a beach
7:44 a.m. — 200 block of North Shore Road. Property Damage. Police discovered that a determined beachgoer who missed the closed North Shore Road beach access so much that he or she pulled down a town fence from its post to gain access.

Complaint department
12:12 p.m. — 100 block of North Shore Road. Trespassing. Two people on the beach became argumentative, because they did not like the manner in which they were spoken to when they were told they were trespassing on a closed beach access. Police told them they could debate about how they were treated in jail if they didn’t get off the beach immediately. The subjects left the beach, “grumbling and complaining” as they left.

Work load
1:12 p.m. — 2800 block of Harbourside Drive. Civil Disturbance. A boat-maintenance contractor wanted to file a complaint against marina employees, who were harassing him and telling him when to start and stop working. Police told the contractor it’s a civil matter he must take up with the marina board.

Just looking
4:01 p.m. — 300 block of North Shore Road. Trespassing. Police witnessed two women climb over a walkway that had a “No Trespassing” sign posted at the North Shore Road beach access. The girls told police they were thinking of renting a condominium unit in the area and decided to go to the beach on a whim. Police gave them trespass warnings on a whim and told them not to return.

May 17
Paradise found
8:28 a.m. — 5400 block of GMD. Suspicious Person. A woman told police that a man was cruising the parking lot of a condominium, passing out dog treats and telling people he was “just enjoying the day on Longboat.”

Keep your distance
9:06 a.m. — 1100 block of GMD. Disturbance. A woman called police to report that she saw a man grab a woman’s arm near a condominium parking lot. Police found the couple and discovered that the pregnant woman had gotten mad at her boyfriend and was attempting to walk home to Sarasota. The boyfriend was trying to get his girlfriend to accept a ride home with him. The girlfriend finally agreed to drive home with him, as long as he didn’t attempt to come into the house with her.

Home sweet home
4:21 p.m. — 2200 block of GMD. Suspicious Circumstance. Police discovered that people had been staying in abandoned houses and recommended that the home be locked up.

Closed for business
4:29 p.m. — 100 block of North Shore Road. Trespassing. Police saw a man at the North Shore Road beach access, and he explained he was “just going to the beach.” Police told him to choose one of the beach access points that were actually open, or he would be arrested.

No calm before this storm
5:15 p.m. — 3100 block of GMD. Suspicious Circumstance. Police responded to a report of disturbance on the beach and discovered there had been an argument between a couple. It was suggested that the group leave due to the approaching storm.

May 18

I dare you to cross that line
4:23 p.m. — 500 block of Ranger Lane. Disturbance. A woman who has had an ongoing dispute with her neighbors regarding the placement of the property line got into another spat. Police advised the woman to get a restraining order against her neighbors and review the homeowner restriction property line guidelines.

Put it in park
10:42 p.m. — 5300 block of GMD. Suspicious Circumstance. A man told police he saw two men “messing with a vehicle.” Upon arrival, the man pointed to the car that was about to drive off. After talking to the occupants of the vehicle, it was discovered the owner of the car was “messing around with his headlight” so he wouldn’t be pulled over. So much for that theory.

May 20

No one’s home
12:59 p.m. — 100 block of North Shore Road. Camping. Police discovered three makeshift shacks on Grier Island, also known as Beer Can Island, and recommended their removal. The inhabitants of the structures could not be found.
