SOUND OFF: Will you vaccinate your child for H1N1?

Freedom Elementary School will be the first East County school to offer students the H1N1 vaccine Nov. 12. Two other schools — Braden River and Kinnan — also will have the vaccine in the next week.

The East County Observer asked parents at Freedom and Braden River elementary schools whether they planned to have their child get the H1N1 vaccine.

“We are really, really healthy. The only reason (my daughter) is getting it is because we’re going to Baltimore for Thanksgiving. If we weren’t traveling, I wouldn’t have her get it. You always get sick on the plane.”

“Yes, I plan on it. I talked to the physician, and the doctor herself is having her kids get it. She said the side effects are very (minimal).”

“We’re not sure. We’re both undecided about it. We’ve heard both sides of the story. Right now (my wife and I) are leaning toward no.”

“I’m on the fence with the whole idea of the vaccine. I’m not sure they know enough about it. My son got the shot last week, and he got the flu.”

“I don’t think so with the information we have so far. We’re also pastors and believe in healing. We’re not against the vaccine or medicine — we know God uses those things, too. If it was me, it might be different, but with your child, you are a little more cautious.”

“Yes. I don’t want her to get the swine flu. I think it’s a good thing they are doing it at the school, too.”

“No. My son’s at home. He just got over the flu. (Both my children) have already gotten over it. Otherwise, I probably would have.”

“No. I really haven’t read much about it. My husband has and he doesn’t agree with it and feels it’s a dangerous vaccine from what he’s seen.”
