Our Lady of Mt. Carmel Catholic Church, in Osprey, got a head start on Christmas gifts this year with a project that has been growing for several years.
Parishioners began arriving at 8:30 a.m. Sunday, Nov. 15, with an overload of chocolate chip cookies that would soon be packed into boxes and sent to U.S. troops in Afghanistan and Iraq. By the end of the day, the church had prepared 6,000 cookies.
To ensure everything arrived fresh, a slice of white bread was added to the top of each package. The parishioners also included Christmas cards in each package.
“It was a very uplifting experience,” Joyce Korinek said. “Everybody wore a big smile on their face — we had so much fun doing it and felt good about it."
