The East County Observer and Bogey’s Restaurant and Sports Pub have teamed up to showcase the East County’s top athletes. Each recipient’s article will be featured on the restaurant’s wall.
After collapsing just short of the finish line at the regional cross country meet last year, Lakewood Ranch sophomore Devin McDermott helped make sure the Lady Mustangs didn’t endure a repeat performance.
McDermott finished sixth at the Class 3A-Region 3 meet Nov. 13 at the Charlotte Sports Park in Port Charlotte, crossing the finish line in 19:35.17 and helping secure Lakewood a spot in Saturday’s FHSAA state meet.
Here is an inside look at this week’s Athlete of the Week:
What is your fondest cross country moment?
Last year when we won districts because we didn’t expect win at all. We knew we had to pass a specific team, and we ended up beating them by two points.
If you weren’t running cross country, what would you be doing?
I was going to do club soccer before high school because it was my main sport. So, I would probably be doing that or venture off into some crazy sport I’ve never done before like tennis and take a whack at it.
What is your favorite subject?
It’s a tie between newspaper, TV production and yearbook. I like the creative classes. I want to get into magazine writing.
What is your favorite food?
Steak and mashed potatoes — I could eat that every night. Whenever we go out to eat, that’s what I get.
What are your hobbies?
Photography, writing, running, baking brownies, going to the beach, watching movies and hanging out with my family and friends.
Do you have any siblings?
I have an older brother Derek, 19, who attends the State College of Florida, and a younger sister, Danae, who is a freshman and is on the school’s dance team.
