On Nov. 19, the Lakewood Ranch High girls softball team threw a surprise celebration for seniors Corey Hanewich and Rachel Slowik.

The girls recently signed national letters-of-intent to play softball. Slowik signed with Florida International University while Hanewich will play for Stanford next spring.

“It’s a relief,” Slowik said of being signed. “It feels really good. This is definitely a dream come true.”

The Lady Mustangs shortstop chose FIU over Jacksonville State, Colgate and Stetson.

“It’s an up and coming softball program, and I’m really excited to be a part of it,” Slowik said. “I basically prayed a lot about it.”

Hanewich chose Stanford over a number of other Division I schools, including Georgia, Wisconsin and Arizona, among others.

“In the back of my mind I always wanted to go there,” Hanewich said. “It’s just such and amazing school both academically and athletically, and one you graduate you’re pretty much set for life.”
