Powell signs 1st female athletic scholarship

Braden River High senior Lauren Powell signed a national letter-of-intent to play softball for Palm Beach Atlantic Nov. 19, inking the Pirates first female athletic scholarship.

“I feel so relieved,” Powell said. “It was so stressful, but now I know I have a spot. I’m still working hard, but it’s not as (stressful).”

The Lady Pirates catcher chose Palm Beach Atlantic over Rollins and Auburn Montgomery in Alabama. Powell was recruited to play catcher as well as in the outfield.

“I like how it’s small and it’s private,” Powell said. “I’m kind of excited for a change, but it’s definitely going to be different.”

Powell will close out her high school career this spring before traveling to Palm Beach Atlantic next fall where she plans to major in pharmacy.
