The East County Observer and Bogey’s Restaurant and Sports Pub have teamed up to showcase the East County’s top athletes. Each recipient’s article will be featured on the restaurant’s wall.

Walking up to the tee on the 13th hole at The Links at Greenfield Plantation, Lakewood Ranch High junior Cole Medvetz didn’t know where he stood.

The only thing the 16-year-old knew for sure was that he was playing the game of his life.

And then, as if on cue, a horn sounded over the course, alerting players of lightning in the area and halting the Manatee County Championships temporarily.

After about an hour delay, the tournament was shortened to nine holes — a welcome relief to Medvetz, who shot an impressive 3-under-par 33 on the front nine to win the county’s individual championship and lead the Mustangs to their second consecutive team title Sept. 25.

“I played really well,” Medvetz said. “I was hitting the ball really well and making a lot of long putts. The greens were rolling, and I was striking the ball really well.”

Medvetz birdied three of his last four holes, beating teammate Rocky Khara by one stroke.
“That was the best I’ve ever done,” Medvetz said.

Medvetz began playing golf competitively when he was 11 years old with his father, Craig.

“Just coming out and playing with my dad was really fun,” Medvetz said. “Every time I would come out, I
would just try and beat my previous score.”

He joined the Lakewood team as a freshman. After helping the Mustangs advance to the state tournament last year, Medvetz is aiming to shoot under 40 at every match this season with the hopes of finishing in the top five at both the district and regional tournaments as an individual and making another appearance in the state tournament.

“Cole is much more determined this year, Lakewood coach Dave Frantz said. “I truly believe the County Championship is just the beginning for him, and it is truly exciting to watch.”
