The East County Observer and Bogey’s Restaurant and Sports Pub have teamed up to showcase the East County’s top athletes. Each recipient’s article will be featured on the restaurant’s wall.

Braden River High junior Ben Peacock earned an automatic berth to the Class 2A state weightlifting championship with a first-place finish in the 154-pound weight class at the Class 2A-Section 7 state qualifier April 10 in Venice. Peacock finished with a combined lift of 490 pounds.

Here is an inside look at this week’s Athlete of the Week.

What was your reaction when you learned you were advancing to the state championships?
I wasn’t necessarily surprised but more excited. Last year, I fell into the pool (and didn’t make it), but first place is guaranteed to go to state.

Which do you prefer the clean and jerk or the bench press?
The clean and jerk. I think that’s what Coach (Josh) Hunter brought to the weightlifting program. … Now when we go to meets we know we’re going to do well because we have good technique.

What are your goals for the state championships?
I want to get a 505 (pound) total. I’m not really worried about placing.

What do you like to do when you aren’t lifting or playing football?
I like to go fishing and hang out with friends. We usually go the Manatee River, and sometimes we’ll go offshore depending on the weather.

Who is your biggest role model?
My dad. He taught me how to be respectful and how to act.

What’s your favorite movie?
“Friday Night Lights.” I just like the whole environment of Friday night football.

If you could go anywhere in the world where would it be and why?
Panama City. We go up around there every summer on vacation, and it’s just a really good family time, and we go fishing and stuff.
