+ Pirates set to host summer hoops camp
Braden River High School will host its sixth annual summer basketball camp June 21 through July 8 for students in grades two through 12.

The camp, which will be held Monday through Thursday at the school, 6545 53rd Ave. E., will be available in one-, two- or three-week sessions. A morning session will be held from 8:30 a.m. to noon for students in grades two through eight, and an afternoon session will be held from 12:30-3:30 p.m. for students in grades nine through 12.

The cost of the camp, which includes a camp T-shirt, daily awards and a basketball, is $300 for all three weeks (morning session only), $120 for one week or $210 for two weeks.

+ Golf outing to raise money for pediatric cancer
The Payton Wright Foundation will hold its second annual Golf Outing May 14 at the Lakewood Ranch Golf & Country Club, 7650 Legacy Blvd.

Following the tournament, participants will move to The Lake Club, where they will enjoy dinner, a silent auction and a concert by country music star David Nail.

The golf tournament will begin with a shotgun start at noon. Cost is $150 per golfer and includes green fees, cart, a box lunch, a gift bag and a ticket to the evening dinner, silent auction and concert.

Those interested in only attending the evening events can purchase a dinner/auction/concert ticket for $75.

+ Palm Aire, FCA team up for children
The Gulf Coast Fellowship of Christian Athletes is now conducting a tennis program for Tots to Teens (ages 4-18) at the Tennis Center at Palm-Aire Country Club, 5601 Country Club Way.

The programs are designed to develop and enhance tennis skills while providing spiritual development. Daily, weekly and monthly programs are now available as after school programs and will continue as summer programs.

Participants also can choose to sign up for one-on-one lessons with Palm-Aire tennis director Greg Hughes or FCA area director and Lakewood Ranch High girls tennis coach Jason Golden. All participants in the FCA tennis program will receive a free junior tennis membership to Palm-Aire.

+ Flames finish as National Runners-Up
The Gulf Coast Flames Bantam AA team finished the season as the National Runners-Up after falling to the Indianapolis Racers in the USA Hockey Tier-II 16 and Under National Championship game April 11.

The Flames easily won every game on their way to the National Championship, earning the No. 1 seed in the tournament. The team’s 7-4 loss to the Racers was its only loss of the tournament.

The Flames train and host all of their home games at the Ellenton Ice and Sports Complex. The team finished as this year’s State Champion and finished as the National Champion in 2008.
