Since he assumed the role of head football coach in January at Sarasota High School, Ed Volz has worked around the clock to build a successful program with the Sailors. He’s starting with freshman football.

“We’ve made a huge investment with them and will have seven freshman coaches,” Volz says. “We want them to develop a relationship with a good adult who is invested with them and the future. These coaches are concerned with academics, life at home and investing in the kids — not as football players, but people. We hope the kids will become emotionally reliant on the program.”

This year, Volz hopes to accomplish three things: increase the level of commitment and dedication to football; focus on increasing strength by making sure players are in great physical condition; and create a sense of entitlement to ensure that the Sailors work to the best of their ability.

“We had a great summer,” Volz says. “We had about 100 kids here every day, lifting weights and running all summer. If I can stand in front of my team and know that we are the hardest-working program in the area, I can live with the results. We’re not going to get beat because we’re unprepared.”

Volz transferred to Sarasota High from Braden River and replaces Bob Perkins, who resigned in December. Prior to that, he spent four years, starting in 2002, coaching the Sailors and leading them to the playoffs every year.

“This is what I do,” Volz says. “I’m a very competitive person and want us to be the best. I love the game and being involved with the kids. I’m here — this is home now."

FAVORITE SCHOOL MEMORY
Last Thursday, we had 72 kids out here running 4,800-yard sprints. To have 72 kids complete that was a pretty special moment for me.
