CLASSROOM SPOTLIGHT: Braden River Middle

Students in Braden River Middle School's National Junior Honor Society dished out soup, bread and desserts to East County residents as part of their annual Empty Bowls luncheon Dec. 9. The event, meant to raise awareness about world hunger, benefited Our Daily Bread.

The East County Observer caught up with students about the experience.

Why do you feel having an event like this is important?
Doing this event is important because it shows we care for people who are in need of food. The kids in NHS have the passion just to go out in the community; we’re not just in school.

What have you learned from hosting this event?
All the causes and the statistics about hunger. I didn’t know all these people in America didn’t have food. It opened my eyes. It’s really emotional.

What have you learned from this experience?
It made me realize how many people are without food and how blessed we are to have a meal every day.

Why is this event important to host?
It helps people in our community that can’t afford food or don’t have the privileges we have. We’re blessed to have everything we have.

What do you think about this event?
I thought it was fun. We all got to skip class, but it’s a lot more important than that. The biggest thing was getting to help people. They get food. Everyone comes here and they want to donate. It’s fun, and (the decorations) look awesome.
