Lady Mustangs head to regional finals

The Lakewood Ranch High girls soccer team advanced one step closer to its goal of reaching the state semifinals with a 2-1 victory over George Steinbrenner in the Class 4A-Region 3 semifinals Feb. 2.

Midfielder Kaitlyn Wolfe gave the Lady Mustangs a 1-0 lead in the 16^th minute off an assist by Taylor “Jo” Salmon. Lakewood further extended its lead in the 30^th minute when Salmon fired the ball into the box to Sarah Miller who headed the ball in for the score.

The Lady Warriors responded in the 32^nd minute when Marley Opila found the back of a wide-open net. The Lady Mustangs held the Lady Warriors to just three shots in the second half.

Lakewood returns to action at 7 p.m., Feb. 5 when the Lady Mustangs host Barron Collier in the Class 4A-Region 3 finals.
