Sarasota Military Academy co-founder Burt Bershon is one heck of a cat-lover. In fact, when the academy opened its doors in 2002, Bershon wouldn’t admit students unless they paused to pet his cat — rumored to be named “Sergeant Major” — upon entering.

Bershon, along with 1,000 other people, attended the grand opening of The Cat Depot Jan. 15 through Jan. 17. A total of 17 cats were adopted.
