Tommy Bahama features "I AM HOME" artists

Bright, blissful colors seemed to bounce off canvases stacked neatly atop shelves and tables at the Tommy Bahama retail store. The artists proudly stood nearby, explaining the meaning of their works and signing autographs.

Tommy Bahama, located on St. Armands Circle, showcased the works of homeless artists living in the Sarasota and Bradenton area who are participants of the “I Am Home” art project Thursday, June 17. The store has been a supporter of the project since its inception in 2009, and has provided the artists with a venue in which to display their artwork.

Last April, the two-hour show generated more than $3,500 in sales. In addition, Tommy Bahama donates 10% of its retail sales to the project.

The mission of the project is to help the homeless by teaching painting techniques, which encourages the artists to help themselves.

“Our artists are dealing with situations in their life that most of us cannot even imagine,” said Janet Taylor, project director. “This art project gives them an opportunity to regain self esteem, build relationships and hopefully find means to get off the streets.”
