The fifth-graders at St. Martha's Catholic School donned costumes and crafted puppets for a class presentation March 8. We asked them whom they chose to study for their project, which involved writing a report and giving an oral presentation, and why that person is important to them.

Joey Firek
Whom did you choose to do your project on and why?

“I picked Mother Teresa because she was an amazing woman and she’s one of the most recent saints. She also did a lot of work with kids and I really like kids.”

How long did it take you to make the puppet?

"Like half an hour. It's just a Coke bottle underneath."

Camille Zarycki
Whom did you choose to do your project on and why?
“I picked Sarah Palin because I think she’s brave and she’s a good role model. She has a son with Down's syndrome and she treats him just like her other two sons. I think she’s a good advocate for people with disabilities.”

Amelia Garey
Whom did you choose to do your project on?
"Elizabeth Stanton. She fought for rights for women."

Why did you choose her?

“I picked her because she showed me how to stand up for myself and what I believe in. And she showed that females are just as important as men and they should have the same rights.”

Evan Berman
Whom are you dressed as?
"Shaq."

Why did you pick him?

“Because I like basketball. I was originally going to do Jackie Robinson, but I couldn’t because I did him in third grade. My second choice was Michael Jordan, but he was taken, so I decided to settle for 'The Shaq.'”

Kylee Weishaar
Why did you choose to do your project on Martin Luther King Jr.?
“I thought he was a good role model and he did a good deed to help African Americans get their rights.”
