Lady Mustangs win big

The Lakewood Ranch High softball team defeated McKeel Academy of Technology 13-3 in non-district action March 13.

The Lady Mustangs took a commanding lead, scoring seven runs in the second inning. Lakewood added a pair of runs in the fourth inning and four runs in the fifth inning to close out the game.

Huntyre Elling earned the win, allowing two hits and a walk while striking out five.

Carey Hanewich went 3-for-4 with the a double, a triple, four RBIs and two runs scored; and Taylor Newton went 3-for-4 with a homerun, three RBIs and two runs scored to lead the way for the Lady Mustangs at the plate.

Dana Hutchins went 2-for-2 with two RBIs and three runs scored. Jenn Trotter went 2-for-3 with a double, a stolen base and two runs scored; and Becca Slowik went 2-for-3 with a double and two runs scored.

With the win, Lakewood improves its record to 11-1-1 and 2-0 in Class 4A-District 10. The Lady Mustangs return to action at 7 p.m., March 16 at Venice.
