The Lady Mustangs notched just one hit in their Class 4A-Region 3 final loss to the Golden Eagles, who are ranked No. 1 in the nation.

Senior Corey Hanewich went 1-for-3 with a stolen base to lead the way for Lakewood at the plate.

Sophomore Huntyre Elling suffered her first loss of the season, allowing three runs on two hits while striking out one and walking two in 1 2/3 innings of work. Junior Brittany Kilduff pitched the remainder of the game in relief, allowing two runs on eight hits while striking out one.

May 7

TRACK AND FIELD

The Lakewood Ranch High girls track team scored 22 points to finish ninth at the Class 3A state finals.

Freshman Kristin Zarrella led the way for the Lady Mustangs, finishing third in the 1,600-meter run (5:05.47) and sixth in the 3,200-meter run (11.29.50) before anchoring the 3,200-meter relay, which also included freshmen Olivia Ortiz, Ashley Platt and Natalie Novake, to a third-place finish (9:33.67).

Ortiz finished seventh in both the 1,600 (5:13.81) and 3,200 (11:31.64). Novak finished sixth in the 800 (2:18.54) before teaming up with Sarah Wolfe, Kristin Hagaman and Devin McDermott in the 1,600 relay, which finished 15th (4:06.63).

Braden River’s Jill Koenig cleared 10 feet to tie for ninth place in the pole vault.

May 8

BASEBALL

Tampa Jesuit 7, Lakewood Ranch 1

After a dismal 1-9 start, the Mustangs turned their season around and advanced to the Class 4A-Region 3 semifinals.

Sophomore Seth McGarry allowed six runs, one of which was earned, on three hits through 4 2/3 innings of work before turning the ball over to freshman Brett Hanewich.

Sophomore Zack Larson hit a double in the third inning, bringing home Shane Davidson for Lakewood’s only run.
