The East County Observer and Bogey’s Restaurant and Sports Pub have teamed up to showcase the East County’s top athletes. Each recipient’s article will be featured on the restaurant’s wall.

Braden River High School junior Jill Koenig cleared 10 feet to tie for ninth place in the pole vault at the Class 3A state finals May 7. Koenig was the lone Pirate to advance to the state finals.

Here is an inside look at this week’s Athlete of the Week.

What do you enjoy the most about pole vault?
I like how it’s different and no one else does it. It’s kind of unique.

Were you pleased with your performance at the state finals?
Yes. Because it was my first time at states, I just wanted to go in and do as good as I could. My goal was to make it to states, so I’m just happy I got there.

Do you play any other sports?
I cheer for the school. I just made the varsity squad this year, so next year will be my first year. I used to do gymnastics, so I figured it would be fun.

Do you have any siblings?
Yes. I have two older sisters — Abby, 27 and Allison, 22.

What’s your favorite dessert?
A brownie sundae

If you could travel anywhere in the world, where would it be and why?
Hawaii. I love the beach.

What’s your favorite TV show?
“The Office.” It’s just really funny.

What are your plans for the summer?
I’m going to North Carolina; I’m going to take piano lessons; and I’m going to get a job. I have a lot of plans.

What’s your favorite subject?
English. I like to read interesting stories.

Do you have any pets?
Yes. I have a Labrador/shepherd mix named Foxy.

Are you from Florida originally?
I’m from Maine, but I only lived there for six months before moving to Florida.
