Manatee East Majors pitcher and outfielder Steven Varone hit a go-ahead grand slam in the District 26 County Cup May 21, propelling the Eye Associates to a 6-3 victory over Bellacinos. The 11-year-old followed up his grand slam with a solo home run May 22 — his third home run of the week.
Here is an inside look at this week’s Athlete of the Week.
What was your reaction when you hit your grand slam?
It was cool because it was my first grand slam, and we were losing too.
What do you enjoy the most about baseball?
Pitching and fielding. I like catching the ball in the outfield and striking out people when I pitch.
What’s the hardest part about baseball?
Hitting. You have to hit a little ball with a bat.
Who is your favorite baseball player?
Ken Griffey Jr. He has a lot of home runs.
Would you rather be out in the field or at the plate?
In the field pitching because I usually get to pitch a lot.
Do you play any other sports?
I play basketball and football, but baseball is my favorite sport.
Do you have any siblings?
I have an older brother Michael who is 12.
Do you have any pets?
I have a Havanese dog named Bella.
What do you like to do when you aren’t playing sports?
I like to play video games, watch TV and play with my dog.
What’s your favorite amusement park ride?
Kraken at Sea World. It’s a roller coaster that goes straight down.
What’s your favorite food?
Pepperoni pizza

Dodgeball
