CLASSROOM SPOTLIGHT: Gullett Elementary (WITH VIDEO)

Children at Gullett Elementary School showed off what they’ve been learning in school Thursday night at the school’s science fair. The East County Observer got a first-hand look at several of the projects.

Ryan Coleman, 11
What was your project?
Battery power — I saw which battery lasted the longest.

What did you learn?
I learned Energizer lasted longer — just by about 11 minutes. I kind of saw that one coming.

What was your project?
The quality cookie. I tested different types of cookie sheets to test which would have the chewiest or the crunchiest cookies.

What were your findings?
The glass gave us the chewiest cookie. Silicone was second. Airbake came in third. Aluminum came in fourth and non-stick burnt is the worst.

Eliza Lipton, 10
What was your project?
It was stain removal. I tried to see which detergent could get out a spaghetti stain best.

What were the results?
The Oxiclean did a lot better than the Publix brand and the Tide did.

Alexa Thomas, 12
What was your project?
The affect of different liquids on the weight of a breadstick. We used orange juice, milk and water.

What were your results?
Water absorbed the most.

How did you find out?
We dropped the breadsticks in the containers and let them soak for 15 minutes. We took them out and weighed them.

Abigail Zion, 9
What was your project?
Ice cubes in the hot sun.

What did you do to test your project?
I put SPF 30 sunscreen on one set of ice cubes and SPF 50 on the other and none on the other and timed them to see which melted the fastest.

What did you learn?
I learned that SPF 50 isn’t much different than SPF 30. It was 97% and 98%. Also, I learned sunscreen only protects humans, not other items.
