Pain management specialist Dr. Lori Brown today addressed about 500 students at Lakewood Ranch High School with the message that prescription and other drugs are dangerous, addictive and can have long-lasting consequences.

The Community Anti-Drug Coalitions of America selected Manatee County as one of five sites nationwide to hold an event as part of National Drug Facts Week, which is observed Nov. 8-14. The Manatee County Substance Abuse Coalition hosted the event.

Students learned about how prescription and other drugs affect the body, including brain function, during an hourlong presentation in the school's auditorium.

Brown, a board certified interventional pain management specialist, serves on the Governor's Prescription Drug Monitoring Implementation and Oversight Task Force.
