The East County Observer and Bogey’s Restaurant and Sports Pub have teamed up to showcase the East County’s top athletes. Each recipient’s article will be featured on the restaurant’s wall.
Senior Ashley Reid set four new school records, including a pair of individual records in the 200-yard individual medley (2:05.49) and the 100 backstroke (58.56), while leading the Lakewood Ranch to a third-place finish at the Class 2A State Swimming and Diving Meet Nov. 12 in Orlando. Here is an inside look at this week’s Athlete of the Week.
Of the four trips you’ve made to the state meet, of which are you the most proud?
Probably my senior year. It was my senior year, and I placed the highest.
What is your favorite event?
The 200 IM. You get a little bit of everything in it. It’s all of the strokes in one.
How did you get into swimming?
I pretty much played all of the different sports. One night, we were watching the Olympics, and swimming was on. I had never tried swimming before, and my mom said ‘Why don’t you give it a try,’ and I just stuck with it.
What are your plans for next year?
I’m definitely going to college for swimming on a scholarship. I don’t know where yet, but I’m (leaning toward) North Carolina State University.
If you could go anywhere in the world, where would it be and why?
Europe or Canada. Europe because of the culture over there — I think it’s interesting. And I’ve just always wanted to go to Canada.
Do you have any siblings?
I have a sister named Brieann, who is 12.
What’s your favorite movie?
“The Sweetest Thing.” I just think it’s hilarious.
What do you like to do when you aren’t swimming?
I like hanging out with my friends and going to the beach. I like music a lot too, so I try to find concerts or shows in St. Pete.
