Nov. 8
Two-timer
10:28 a.m. — 2000 block of Main Street. General Suspicion. A man asked an attorney to amend his marriage license that was signed in 2006, so it showed their wedding had just occurred. Getting suspicious, the attorney looked a little further into the matter. The man divorced his first wife last July — four years after he married his second wife. The attorney reported the man to police, because he believed he might have committed a crime.

Nov. 9
This takes the cake
10:30 a.m. — 5400 block of Bay Shore Road. Theft. While a woman’s daughter and son-in-law were cutting the cake at their wedding reception, a thief stole the woman’s antique purse. The $2,400 Judith Leiber handbag was covered with precious stones on the handle and rhinestones on the body. Another purse belonging to a wedding guest was also stolen and recovered at a woman’s home in Central Florida. The bride’s mother suspects that woman took her purse as well.

Sick thief
2 p.m. — 1700 block of South Tamiami Trail. Petit Theft. While a woman was in the hospital emergency room with her husband, someone reached into her purse and snagged her wallet. A credit card, debit card, driver’s license and $50 cash were stolen.

Check, please
2:55 p.m. — 5900 block of South Tamiami Trail. Forged Check. A man walked into a check-cashing store and wanted to cash a check for $275. He gave the clerk two phone numbers for the person who allegedly wrote the check. However, the clerk saw that the same man cashed a check from the same person five days earlier at a different store location. The person who wrote the check was there with the man that day. The check writer’s phone number was already in the computer system, and it was different than the two numbers the customer gave her. She called the number in the computer, and the check writer said he did not write that check and, in fact, his checkbook had been stolen.

Scuba dooby doo
3:06 p.m. — 1600 block of Ringling Boulevard. Suspicious Person. The complainant reported someone was sitting at a table outside the Sarasota County Administration Building wearing a scuba mask. The caller said the man was acting strangely.

Cut and run
5:30 p.m. — 2800 block of Ringling Boulevard. Theft. Two landscapers had just finished mowing some grass and took blowers around the corner to clean up the clippings. When they returned to their truck, two $13,000 mowers, two $400 blowers, two $300 weed eaters and two $300 edgers were missing. The employees saw a box truck leaving the scene but were unable to get a license plate number.

Nov. 10
What’s in a name?
12:05 a.m. — South Shade Avenue and Siesta Drive. Habitual Offender of Driving with a Suspended License and Giving a False Name to Law Enforcement. A sheriff’s deputy pulled over a woman who had an expired tag on her van. She gave him her name, but there was no record of that name in the computer. He approached her again and told her he didn’t think she was telling the truth. After a few minutes of hemming and hawing, she provided her real name, which was in the computer system. She was a habitual traffic offender. She told the deputy she lied because she didn’t want to get into more trouble.
