The Manatee County School District this week will celebrate School Bus Safety Week as a way to remind motorists and students to be extra safe when driving around or near school buses.

The school district is joining the Florida Department of Education, the Florida Department of Highway Safety and Motor Vehicles and the Florida Department of Transportation for the weeklong event, which runs Oct. 18-22.

“School buses are still the safest mode of transportation available to our students,” Manatee School’s Superintendent Tim McGonegal said. “However, we all need to remain extra vigilant when it comes to obeying traffic laws around school buses because we want to make sure our kids are safe going to and from school.”

Florida residents can review laws concerning passing a stopped school bus by visiting www.floridaschoolbussafety.gov.
