ATHLETE OF THE WEEK: Will Kazokas

The East County Observer and Bogey’s Restaurant and Sports Pub have teamed up to showcase the East County’s top athletes. Each recipient’s article will be featured on the restaurant’s wall.

Sophomore Will Kazokas has been rewriting the Lakewood Ranch High School records books this season. Kazokas, who set the school record in the 50-yard freestyle (21.75) Sept. 15, recently captured three more schools records — the 100 free (48.54), the 200 free (1:43.51) and the 100 butterfly (52.71) — at the Tri-County Swim Meet Oct. 9, bringing his season total to four. Here is an inside look at this week’s Athlete of the Week.

|Of which of your four school records are you most proud?
The 50 freestyle. It was the first event that I swam with the (high school) team. It was a very small dual meet, and it was right after morning practice. I was tired, and nobody expected me to go fast.

What do you enjoy the most about swimming?
It’s an individual sport. You’re swimming for and against yourself, but it also has a team aspect to it. I like the mix of both.

What do you like to do when you aren’t swimming?
There’s not a lot of time that I’m not swimming, but I try to catch up on sleep, and I work on the farm with my dad.

Do you have any pets?
I have two-dozen chickens, two dogs, two cats and three sheep.

What’s your favorite TV show?
I don’t have a TV, so I don’t watch TV. I don’t like it. I never have.

Who is your favorite swimmer?
Nicholas Caldwell. He swims on my (Sarasota Sharks) team and he’s a national record-holder. He’s the best swimmer and person I know.

If you could have any superpower what would it be and why?
Telekinesis. I’m way too tired and lazy to do anything.
