Sarasota Crew wins gold

The Sarasota Crew won 11 medals in their first regatta of the 2010-2011 season at the First Coast Head Race Oct. 16 in Jacksonville.

The Crew, which was competing against 750 participants throughout the state, won four gold medals, four silver medals and three bronze medals. The Men’s Youth 8, Men’s Youth 4, Men’s Youth <15 1X and Women’s Youth Novice 8 teams all won gold medals. The Men’s Youth 1X, Men’s Youth Lightweight 4, Men’s Youth <15 1X and Men’s Youth Novice 8 teams all won silver medals. The Men’s Youth 1X, Women’s Youth 8 and Women’s Youth Novice B teams all won bronze medals.

This was the first time the Crew had competed in the race.

“Our rowers are off to an incredible start,” head coach Casey Galvenek said. “Expectations are as high as ever, and we may as well have put a target on our backs with these results against the best in the state.”
