The East County Observer and Bogey’s Restaurant and Sports Pub have teamed up to showcase the East County’s top athletes. Each recipient’s article will be featured on the restaurant’s wall.

Braden River High School girls swim coach Abby Williams describes Holly Neuhaus as a great leader and role model. “Her work ethic is outstanding,” Williams said. “The team has been dealing with pool issues this fall, and she has kept the team in positive spirits.” In the pool, Neuhaus is a versatile threat for the Lady Pirates and so far this season has placed in the top in several events. Here’s an inside look at this week’s Athlete of the Week.

How long have you been swimming?
Fourteen years — I started when I was 3 or 4. My grandmother lives in Michigan, and she wanted her granddaughters to be able to swim.

What’s your favorite event?
The 100-meter free. It’s one of the most competitive events and offers the most challenges. Plus, it’s cool to be able to swim four lengths of the pool in under a minute.

What are your goals this season?
To better my times. As a team, it’s just to build. We have a lot of great underclassmen who will be better than me, and that’s great.

What else do you enjoy besides swimming?
Basketball, and I’m a part of TSA (Technology Student Association). I also like hanging out with my youth group. (Holly attends Harvest United Methodist Church in Lakewood Ranch).

What’s your favorite movie?
“Pride and Prejudice” — the one with Keira Knightley.

What’s your favorite vacation spot?
This is going to sound like a cop-out, but really, it’s here in Florida.

What are your college plans?
I’m looking at art schools. I want to major in graphic design and someday own my own business.

Do you have any siblings?
I have an older sister, Kaylee, who is 20.
