Kudos to Roland Abraham
Roland Abraham, of Sarasota, combined a caring heart for kids who wanted to go to college and could not afford to with an incredible degree of personal frugality and self control. He helped 963 young men and women get through college.
Abraham owned a car but would ride his bike or even take the bus from his average home in Gulf Gate to volunteer at Mote Marine Lab. He gave what he had to the lab — his print-shop acumen.
Some people give from their abundance and get lauded while feeling little sacrifice. Abraham did not have an abundance that he spent on himself, but over about 20 years he gave $1.7 million to students for college.
He died at age 94 last week. R.I.P.
