The Boston Marathon is the world's oldest annual marathon and is ranked as one of the world's best-known road racing events. The annual event began in 1897 with only 18 participants.
Today, the event attracts more than 20,000 participants plus more than 500,000 spectators each year. The race has high standards and specific qualifying running times that need to be met in order to participate in the race.
Out of the more than 20,000 people who ran in the race Monday, April 18, there were 16 runners from Sarasota and one from Osprey.
Local racers included: Adam Bright, Lynne Buchanan, Nicholas Clark, Manuel Camacho, Linda Driggs, Robert Frimmel, Christine Gerbstadt, Robert Hammond, Jim Harding, Rob Kohnen, Clifford McHenry, Dan Pollock, Jeremiah Ryan, Denise Skinner, Katie Waters, Sheri Weinstein and Bobby Williams.
