Selby Children's library to close during remodel project

The Selby Public Library, built in 1988, is the busiest of the country’s eight public libraries — handling an average of 800,000 visits each year.

The $1.2 million remodeling of the library, located at 1331 First St., is proceeding on schedule, with the next phase to include the temporary closing of the Children’s Library Aug. 19 through Sept. 2. During this time, participants of children’s programs are encouraged to attend similar activities and events at North Sarasota Library, Fruitville Library and Gulf Gate Library. Any items reserved for pick up from the children’s collection will still be available at the Selby Library.

“Temporarily closing the Children’s Library ensures the safety and comfort of patrons,” said Sarabeth Kalajian, general manager of the Sarasota County Library system. “Although this will mean a change for families that visit Selby, we hope people will plan ahead and take advantage of the children’s library sections in our other libraries.”

The Selby Public library will be closed on Fridays during the remodeling project, scheduled for completion this November.
