Public schools in Manatee County this morning welcomed back more than 42,000 students to begin the 2011-12 school year.
So far, district officials say the day has gone smoothly.
"Things are going very well this morning," said Supervisor of Communications & Public Information Margi Nanney. "Our staff has worked very hard all summer to prepare for schools, and it's going smoothly so far."
The East County includes eight elementary schools, three middle schools and two high schools.
