Marie Barr, of Sarasota, and formerly of Highland Park, Ill., and Bennington, Vt., died Aug. 28. She was 88.
Mrs. Barr was born June 11, 1923, in Budapest.
Mrs. Barr was an advocate of many social and political causes throughout her life and was instrumental in founding Barr Electric Corp, an electrical contracting company, in 1962 in Wheeling, Ill., with her husband, Stephen. She was also a member of the G.WIZ — The Science Museum Board of Directors and a former umpire for the USTA.
Mrs. Barr was a regular attendee of reconstruction congregations in Sarasota and Bennington. She was an avid reader, traveler and a participant and follower of multiple sports. She could recite baseball, football, tennis and soccer scores and matches with incisive detail and recall.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Stephen; daughter, Patricia Barr; and sister, Claire Ridker.
She is survived by her daughter, Teri Barr, of Oakland, Calif.; son, Michael, of Libertyville, Ill.; five grandchildren; and one niece.
A memorial service will take place at 2:30 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 1, at Plymouth Harbor, 700 John Ringling Blvd. An additional memorial service will take place at a later date in Bennington.
