A runner since 2006, Diane Lyons created ShamRockersUSA, Inc. for the purpose of introducing kids to crossing the finish line of half marathons around the world.
“To teach the joys of long-distance running is to also teach the mental commitment to a challenge, the proper nutrition required for optimum health, time management to work your training around homework and jobs and the ability to ignore the minor physical obstacles and injuries that may occur during training,” Lyons said.
In addition to the First Watch Sarasota Half Marathon and Relay, in which the ShamRockersUSA team has participated since the first race, the team also runs every Disney Endurance Series race, takes running holidays abroad and in June 2012 hopes to run the Finland Santa Claus Marathon.
“We make it fun — the kids lose weight, gain friends and achieve success, which grows their self-esteem,” Lyons said.
To help first-timers or veterans get to the finish line within a projected time or goal, local running stores, charity organizations and coaches are offering a variety of training programs. The full list can be found at sarasotahalfmarathon.com.
