With the holiday break behind them, fifth-grade students at Gullett Elementary School already are busy focusing on their schoolwork. The East County Observer caught up with a few students in Melissa Raynor's class to find out about their academic goals for the upcoming semester.

What are your academic goals for the rest of the school year?

Liana Price, 11
I want to read more because we have to read 30 minutes ever night. Sometimes, I don’t do that because I don’t have enough time. I want to get straight As, too.

Victoria Carr, 10
My goal is to improve my vowel sounds and chunking words more — the pronunciation. I’m going to try to get Honor Roll for the school. I want to read more. I don’t read a lot.

Jazayeah Burls, 11
I’m working on correct sounds and combinations (when reading) and getting my goal (for the Accelerated Reader program) up for reading. I have to earn 15 points. I want to get all As and Bs.

Macy Duregger, 10
My goal is 18 points (for the Accelerated Reader program), and I have 30 points. I want to do better in science and social studies.

Zane Brantley, 10
I need 12 points (for the AR program) to get to my goal. I want to pass my goal. I need to do better in science and math.

Garth Bjurholm, 11
I want to work on my spelling. I need to work on correct vowel sounds. I want to get all As.
