Journey of a Lifetime

Fifty-eight chocolate-chip cookies, 22 bananas, 18 peanut butter-and-jelly sandwiches, 18 hard-boiled eggs, 16 apples, five cans of sardines and two cans of cashews later, the wheels of Dennis Flood’s Cessna 172 — The Liberty — safely touched ground after an 11,000-mile trip to Alaska.

Two years ago, Flood, a Sarasota resident, decided to make the flight to Alaska because it is the farthest distance he can fly from Florida.

“I didn’t want to look back someday and say, ‘I wish I had.’ We all need to do those kinds of things,” Flood said. “The big thing about the trip is to show that an average guy like me can go to flight school, restore a 1981 aircraft and put together a flight plan to fly from one end of the country all the way across to the other.”
