It happens every year.

So, of course, I’m used to it by now.

It’s the time of year when I bid farewell to another group of talented athletes who have made the past year, and in some cases, the past four years, nothing short of memorable.

They’ve provided me with dozens of stories, photo opportunities and road trips not to mention countless laughs along the way.

Yes, the Class of 2011 has been nothing short of enjoyable; and as I look back on all it’s accomplished over the past four years, there are several seniors and achievements that I’ll always remember:

• A group of student athletic trainers who always managed to put a smile on my face and on those around them no matter how bleak the situation may have looked out on the field.
• A pair of brothers who have shown that true brotherhood can be found in the most unlikely of places.
• A basketball player who has scored more points on her own than most teams.
• A pair of baseball players who defied the odds, overcoming catastrophic injuries to help lead their teams both on and off the field.
• A handful of softball players who are probably the loudest individuals in the East County, especially when it comes to cheering on their teammates. And one  player in particular who has shown me that I definitely need to work on my catching skills.
•  A kicker whose historic kick extended a season and allowed us all to get a much needed cup of hot chocolate … Yes, it can get rather cold in November in Florida.
• A group of soccer players who demonstrated what it means to win as a team. And one who carries the future of a nation on his back.
• A handful of swimmers who continually set new school records faster than I can post the results.

As you can see, the list goes on and on. The student athletes of the Class of 2011 have made tremendous strides both athletically and academically over the past four years.

And, so with that, I’m prepared to issue a new challenge. To the Class of 2012: May you follow in the footsteps of your former teammates, continuing to represent your school and giving me plenty to write about in the year ahead.
