+ East Manatee River Dawgs win tournament
The East Manatee River Dawgs U10 baseball team captured the USSSA Battle to the Bone Memorial Weekend Tournament May 28-29 in Oldsmar.

The River Dawgs overcame two losses in pool play by winning three straight single-elimination games to advance to the championship game, in which they defeated Osceola Powerhouse 13-10.

Trailing 6-4 in the bottom of the fourth inning, East Manatee scored eight runs on key hits by Mason Kolbe, Hunter Bogumil, Tyler Reed and Matt Gelorme to take the lead.

The Powerhouse mounted a rally in the top of the sixth inning, scoring three runs.

The River Dawgs clinched the championship when Kolbe fielded a line drive in right field and threw the ball to third baseman Harrison Thiel, who tagged out the runner attempting to advance from first base. River Dawgs pitchers Thiel, Bogumil, Reed and Jared Dole held the Powerhouse to five hits while striking out five.

The team, led by Thiel with 12 strikeouts finished the tournament having struck out 22 batters.

East Manatee scored 57 runs on 63 hits over the course of the tournament. Bogumil led the way for the River Dawgs at the plate with 10 hits and Thiel and Reed each had eight hits.

Championship players include: Connor Landers, Thiel, Rob Arakel, Bogumil, Gelorme, Charlie George, Collin Goda, Jimmy Heyworth, Reed, Kolbe and Dole.

The River Dawgs will return to action in the U10 Big Kahuna Tournament July 17-22 at the Ripken Experience, in Myrtle Beach, S.C.

+ Sarasota Crew wins regional title
The Sarasota Crew high school men’s varsity 8+ team captured first place in the premiere rowing event for the Southeast Regional Championship Regatta May 21-22, bringing home the Spooner Cup for that event.
Overall, Sarasota Crew had four teams qualify for the US Youth National Championships in June in Oak Ridge, Tenn., with 30 athletes competing for national titles.

In addition to the men’s 8+ championship, Sarasota Crew won silver medals in the Men’s Championship 2- and the Men’s Lightweight 8+. The Women’s Championship 8+ team won a bronze medal that also qualified them for the U.S. Youth National Championships.

“The results we had this past weekend are remarkable,” said Sarasota Crew head coach Casey Galvanek. “Our squads have shown great skill and speed today. This is the largest contingent of athletes ever qualified for nationals out of our region. I can’t describe how exciting this really is.”

Gold medal victories include: Men’s Championship 8+: Hunter Leeming, Josh Schmidt, Travis Taaffe, Ryan Hails, Ryan Anderson, Andrew Konecny, Jose Colon, Nick Duncan, Grant Golub (cox).

Silver medal victories include: Men’s Lightweight 8+: Andre Dupuis, Ryan Day, Drake Stevens, Anthony Rzepka, Daven Natarajan, Joseph McClannahan, Maddux Castle, Jacob Amontree, Anthony Senseman (cox). Men’s Championship 2-: Jacob Strauss and Chase Rowe.

Bronze medal victories include: Women’s Championship 8+: McKayla Taaffe, Gabby Halula, Sierra Luther, Hannah Meister, Karolina Wadolowska, Katherine Flanders, Carolina Elizalde, Marissa Beiling and Emily Goff (cox).

SUMMER SPORTS CAMPS

+ Braden River baseball
The Braden River baseball team will host its 2011 Pirates Baseball Summer Camp from 8:30 a.m. to 1 p.m., June 13-16, at the Braden River High baseball field.

The camp, open to all players ages 6-14, will help players improve their baseball skills while learning the fundamentals of hitting, pitching, base running, fielding and throwing.

The cost is $110 per player and water will be provided. Drinks will be available for $1 and participants are asked to bring their own lunch.

+ Braden River basketball
The Braden River basketball team will host its Seventh annual Summer Basketball Camp from 8:30 a.m. to 12 p.m., June 13-16, June 20-23 and July 5-8.

Braden River coach Matt Nesser, assistant coaches and Pirates players will provide players with the fundamental skills to help aid them in their individual development.

The camp is open to all students entering third through ninth grades. The cost, which includes a camp T-shirt, daily awards and a basketball, is $120 for one week, $220 for two weeks or $300 for all three weeks. A 10% discount for Manatee County School Board members will be available as well as family rates and financial aid.

+ LWR High baseball
The Lakewood Ranch High baseball team will host its fourth Mustang Baseball Camp from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m., June 27 through July 1 and July 11-15.

The camp, open to children ages 6-14, will teach participants the fundamentals of hitting, pitching, base running, fielding and throwing. Participants will also learn proper infield and outfield play and the rules of the game while establishing good sportsmanship, commitment and team unity within a fun and education atmosphere.

The cost is $125 per session, which includes water. Participants need to bring their own lunch. Lunch of a hotdog, chips and a drink will be available for $4. Gatorade will also be available for purchase.

+ Treasure Chest Soccer
Treasure Chest Soccer will host a fun summer foot skills camp from 8 a.m. to Noon, June 20-24 and July 5-9, at Braden River High, 6545 53rd Ave. E.

The camp is open to all children ages 7-13 at a cost of $125.

Braden River coaches Janjay Gehndyu and Don Engelberger will provide instruction along with special guest coach Prince Borde of Louisiana College.
