Fourteen-year-old Joey Fazio recently was named Southeast High School’s Freshman Student Scholar Athlete of the Year. The IB honor student was a member of the football, weightlifting and wrestling teams and won a district championship for wrestling. Here is an inside look at this week’s Athlete of the Week.
What was your reaction when you were named the Freshman Student Scholar Athlete of the Year?
I was surprised. I didn’t think I would win it because there are a lot of good athletes at my school who are my age.
Of the sports that you play, which one is your favorite?
Wrestling and football. They’re really close. I couldn’t say which one I like better.
What is your fondest sports moment?
The district championship in wrestling. It was my first year, and I just won. I’d never wrestled before.
What do you enjoy the most about wrestling?
You get to slam someone. It’s also one-on-one. There’s no one else out there. It’s you against the other guy.
What’s your favorite subject?
Math. It’s the easiest.
Do you have any siblings?
I have twin sisters, Emma and Sarah, who are 11 years old.
Do you have a favorite movie?
“The Sandlot.” I love that movie. I’ve watched it like a million times.
If you could go anywhere on summer vacation, where would it be and why?
Connecticut. That’s where my family is.
Who is your favorite athlete?
Kemba Walker. UConn is my favorite college, and he’s really good.
If you could have one superpower, what would it be?
Strength. So I can win weightlifting.
What’s your favorite food?
Pepperoni pizza
Are you from Florida originally?
No, I’m from Connecticut. I moved to Florida when I was 9 years old.
What do you like to do when you aren’t playing sports?
Hang out with my friends. I usually play sports year-round.
