Members of the Manatee County School Board on Monday unanimously agreed to extend Superintendent Tim McGonegal's contract to Dec. 31, 2013.

Although McGonegal has earned his doctoral degree since assuming he post, he turned down the $13,000 increase in pay associated with it. He currently makes $171,000 annually.

The vote came just hours after a group of citizens called for a nationwide search for a new superintendent of schools.

Several residents attended the meeting to speak in favor of McGonegal.

Summerfield resident John Annis said he's worked with McGonegal through United Way and other capacities over the years and has confidence in his leadership abilities.

"I can't imagine we could get a better superintendent anywhere in the country," Annis said. "I know we are in a tough spot, but I think (McGonegal) is doing the responsible thing."
