The question posed to an assortment of Sarasota parents and grandparents was: ”Where do you go out to eat when you are taking the kids or grandkids?” McDonald’s and pizza make anticipated but limited appearances. These kids go for teppanyaki, sushi and organic foods.
“As a family, we all love Kazu – Sy, 10, is an edamame, tempura and rice guy, and Hugh, 8, goes for miso soup and sushi, particularly the eel rolls. The kids often vote for TooJay’s first. Sy is stuck on those chicken fingers, and Hugh has a thing for their matzoh ball soup … and both consume a small mountain of their fresh rye bread every time. Both restaurants are a sigh of relief for Mom … there’s nothing worse than announcing your dinner plan for the night and hearing your kids say, ‘Ugh, not that again, Mom …’”

“Jason’s Deli on University Parkway … all-natural or organic and no artificial additives. My kids’ favorite part is the free ice cream. If you asked Jordan, he would say ‘Old McDonald,’ only because of the play area.”

“Tommy Bahama for ribs. Tokyo is always lots of fun, easy and makes for great conversation. The ‘I Love You’ crepe at Café Palm is heaven — I wish they had a drive-thru window. ”

“Our grandchildren are seven girls and, finally, a boy! They love coming here. We take them to Owen’s Fish Camp, Mediterraneo and Dry Dock. And the best: Michael’s On East and the Wine Cellar. We have celebrated our big birthdays there.”

“One of our favorites is Demetrio’s. Ansley and Matthew often frequent ‘Metrio’s and they love when the owner brings them a plate of pasta shells while they wait. It has been a favorite of the Morris family for decades. My husband’s family has lived around the corner for over 20 years and many a Sunday evening meal has been shared over Greek salad and pizza.”

“We enjoy dinner with our grandchildren, Avery Fields, 12, and Blair Fields, 9, along with their parents at Café Don Giovanni. Wonderful owner, good food, fair prices, etc. But, of course, Grammy’s kitchen, which she uses a lot, is always the best.”

“My 10-year-old grandson prefers the Beach Bistro to Patrick’s and filet mignon to burgers. Not typical, but he wants to be a chef and requests a trip to the kitchen wherever we go. He is not a cheap date, but what a lot of fun and surprises.”
