Fifteen-year-old East County resident Rhoda Tanui returned from a shoulder injury to win the Girls 18 Spring Super Series Tennis Tournament April 23-24 at Countryside Golf & Tennis Club in Clearwater. The sophomore trains at the Celsius Tennis Academy at Bath & Racquet Club. Here is an inside look at this week’s Athlete of the Week.

What was your reaction when you won the tournament?

It was a real confidence-booster. I didn’t go into expecting anything, but I really wanted to win. Just to be able to get back out there was good.

How did you get into tennis?
I started playing about five years ago. I transferred schools and my new school had tennis. Initially, my mom wanted me to do ballet, piano and swimming, but I wasn’t into it. So I used to forge her signature, so I could play tennis.

What do you enjoy the most about tennis?
It’s just so liberating. There are not many sports where you get to go out and take out your aggression. I like getting out there, sweating and meeting new people.

Who is your favorite tennis player?
Roger Federer is my overall favorite tennis player. I just think we’re so different. His attitude on the court is something I admire.

Are you from Florida originally?
No, I’m from Kenya. On July 8, 2008, we boarded the plane, and we got here July 10 at night. It was a sad day for me. I really wanted to come here, and I was very excited, but once I got here, I had no friends and I didn’t know anyone.

Do you have any siblings?
I have a brother Eric, who is 22 years old. He’s still back home. I miss him.

What’s your favorite movie?
“The Hangover.” It’s funny. It puts you in a good mood.

If you could go anywhere in the world, where would it be and why?
Back home. I would go for the food. I never realized how good I had it while I was there.
