Matthew O’Sullivan, 11, began playing baseball for Cal Ripken Little League at Heritage Harbour when he was 5 years old. Since then, the second baseman, who has two titanium rods in his back and has undergone 20 surgeries, has become a source of inspiration. On May 15, Matthew was presented with the Matthew O’Sullivan Spirit of the Game Award, which will be presented annually to a player who exemplifies Matthew’s spirit.

What does this award mean to you?
It’s cool. I don’t really know what to say. I’m a little nervous. It was kind of weird at first.

How did you get into baseball?
I always watched the Rays. It’s fun.

What do you enjoy the most about baseball?
Everything — but especially hitting. It’s easy, and it makes me feel good.

Would you rather be swinging the bat or in the field grabbing ground balls?
Swinging the bat. I like to hit the ball and help the team win.

Do you have a favorite baseball player?
Evan Longoria. He’s a good baseball player.

Do you have a favorite baseball team?
The (Tampa Bay) Rays. I’ve met some of the players, and I got to play catch with Rocco (Baldelli) on the field.

What’s your fondest baseball moment?
I won the championship four seasons ago as a Rookie.

What do you want to be when you grow up?
A baseball player.

If you could have one super power what would it be?
To be invisible. I don’t really know why, but it’s cool.

If you could go anywhere on vacation this summer where would it be?
On a cruise to the Bahamas. I’ve been there before and it’s got the beach. I like the beach and it’s fun.

Do you have a favorite subject?
Physical Education. It’s fun and you get to be outside and play.
