Sarasota Crew wins regional title

The Sarasota Crew high school men’s varsity 8+ team captured first place in the premiere rowing event for the Southeast Regional Championship Regatta May 21-22, bringing home the Spooner Cup for that event.

Overall, the Crew had four teams qualify for the US Youth National Championships in June in Oak Ridge, Tenn. with 30 athletes competing for national titles.

In addition to the men’s 8+ championship, the Crew won silver medals in the Men’s Championship 2- and the Men’s Lightweight 8+. The Women’s Championship 8+ team won a bronze medal that also qualified them for the US Youth National Championships.

“The results we had this past weekend are remarkable,” said Sarasota Crew Head Coach Casey Galvanek.  “Our squads have shown great skill and speed today.  This is the largest contingent of athletes ever qualified for nationals out of our region.  I can’t describe how exciting this really is.”

Gold Medal Victory:

Men’s Championship 8+:  Hunter Leeming, Josh Schmidt, Travis Taaffe, Ryan Hails, Ryan Anderson, Andrew Konecny, Jose Colon, Nick Duncan, Grant Golub (cox)

Silver Medal Victories:

Men’s Lightweight 8+:  Andre Dupuis, Ryan Day, Drake Stevens, Anthony Rzepka, Daven Natarajan, Joseph McClannahan, Maddux Castle, Jacob Amontree, Anthony Senseman (cox)

Men’s Championship 2-:  Jacob Strauss, Chase Rowe

Bronze Medal Victory:

Women’s Championship 8+:  McKayla Taaffe, Gabby Halula, Sierra Luther, Hannah Meister, Karolina Wadolowska, Katherine Flanders, Carolina Elizalde, Marissa Beiling, Emily Goff (cox)
