Five Braden River High Schools students returned recently from Michigan after a strong finish at the Society of Automotive Engineers’ Formula One in Schools USA National Championships.

Pirate Racing, Florida’s F1 In School Champions, captured the title for Best Verbal Presentation after delivering a flawless presentation. The event was held at the famed Michigan International Speedway in Brooklyn, Mich. The team finished in seventh overall after two days of competition against teams from across the country.

Pirate Racing comprises five Braden River students, each with specific roles on the F1 In Schools team.

Aubrey Hudson, 16, is team manager; Kali Hoying is team resource manager; Jeremy Petty, 17, is the design engineer and manufacturing engineer; Greg Raynor, 17, is the team’s graphic designer and Mario Palmer, 14, is the team’s marketing manager.

F1 In Schools is an international competition that requires students to utilize computer-aided design software and a CNC mill to design and manufacture identical, miniature C02-powered balsa wood F1 racecars.
