A melon-headed whale nicknamed Dante who was stranded Oct. 23 on Manasota Key has been stabilized by Mote Marine’s Dolphin and Whale Hospital. Dante was treated for pneumonia and gastroenteritis and has been transferred to SeaWorld Orlando for long-term care.

Mote’s cost of caring for marine mammals is approximately $4,500 per day. The Gulf of Mexico is home to approximately 3,450 melon-headed whales.
