Lakewood Ranch High senior Devin McDermott was named one of 12 national finalists, of the 48,000 students who applied, for the 2011 Wendy’s High School Heisman Award, which honors exceptional students who bring excellence in academics, athletics and community service.
McDermott submitted her application Oct. 2 and was chosen as a school winner Oct. 24 and was later named a state winner.
On Nov. 10, McDermott was named one of the national finalists during a surprise ceremony. McDermott will now travel to New York City where one female and one male national winner will be chosen. The winners will receive a crystal Wendy’s High School Heisman trophy, a $10,000 donation to their high schools, and recognition during the collegiate Heisman ceremony Dec. 9 in New York City.
